Precision ADM Releases New White Paper on the Benefits of Additive Manufacturing for Customized Medical Implants

Costs can be significantly reduced by utilizing additive manufacturing over traditional casting manufacturing methods

Precision ADM, Inc. (“Precision ADM” or “the Company”), a global engineering and additive manufacturing solutions provider, announced today the release of a new white paper explaining the additive manufacturing and development process in a case study which sought to manufacture a customized surface-guided knee implant.

The case study found that unique geometry, such as a patient-optimized knee implant, lends itself to the flexibility of additive manufacturing. By contrast, traditional casting manufacturing methods which deviate from set sizes can be penalized with high production costs.

The white paper explores the results of kinematic validation simulation testing on the implant done by the Orthopaedic Innovation Centre. The testing reveals that utilizing additive manufacturing and key post-processing operations on this customized knee implant resulted in samples that exceeded expectations in the following ways:

  • The surface polish was mirror-like and exceeded specifications.
  • The complex and customized shape was highly accurate which allowed the testing to replicate knee movements that were in close agreement with the in silico simulations of the implant.

“The flexibility of additive manufacturing to accommodate unique designs is not nearly as cost prohibitive as traditional manufacturing. It is possible to provide superior medical devices that could improve patient outcomes while lowering overall costs,” commented Martin Petrak, CEO of Precision ADM.
